If you live in a small home or apartment, a dishwasher is a luxury you don’t have room for in most cases. Some landlords provide a dishwasher for tenants, but typically you’re stuck hand washing dishes. A portable dishwasher is a perfect solution for anyone that needs a dishwasher but doesn’t have room for a dishwasher.
We looked at a lot of portable dishwashers to help you narrow down your choices. There are so many on the market finding the one that fits your needs is a daunting task. We’ve rated the brands in our 5 best portable dishwasher brands for 2018 list based on a few key points. First, we looked at the price because a portable dishwasher should cost less than a full-size, built-in appliance.
We finished our ratings based on durability, selection, available sizes and overall customer reviews. It was a lot of data to compile and go through, so we’ve condensed the list to take all the work out of it for you.
As you look through our list and don’t find the major brands you expected, keep in mind that larger companies often own several smaller companies or brands. For instance, Whirlpool owns Magic Chef. Let’s get right into it and look at our first top-five contender.
- 6 Place-setting Capacity
- Easy-to-use Electronic Controls With Digital Display
- 5 Wash-cycle Options Using Program Knob
Magic Chef hits our list with 85 years of experience making appliances. They make just about any appliance you can think of from refrigerators to dishwashers. Our focus is on dishwashers, so let’s look at our favorite Magic Chef portable dishwasher.
The Magic Chef 6-place setting dishwasher is our pick for the best portable dishwasher Magic Chef offers. Magic Chef built it for easy use with electronic controls and a digital display. It has six wash cycles that are adjustable using a knob instead of a series of buttons. You can set it up in minutes using their quick setup kit and self-installation kit.
The rack inside the dishwasher has a cutlery basket and cup rack. This feature is not standard among portable dishwashers, and it became part of our rating criteria. There are several other talking points for this dishwasher including an automatic detergent and rinse aid dispenser and an anti-clog feature to avoid messy spills. It’s one of the quietest models on the market.
There were a few things we didn’t find appealing. It only comes in white. It weighs 50-pounds, so it’s more of a countertop dishwasher than a portable dishwasher, but it still qualifies for our list. It measures 21.7” wide by 17.2” tall by 20.4” deep, so it is compact for easy storage, but the size didn’t seem to fit the weight.
You get a great product backed by a warranty and magic Chef’s 85 years of high-quality manufacturing experience.
- Durable stainless steel interior and spray arm; Tub Material : Plastic
- Dish rack and silverware basket; up to 6 standard place settings capacity
- User friendly controls; automatic detergent and rinse agent dispenser
SPT isn’t as well known as Magic Chef, but they make a wide range of appliances. Among the products sporting the SPT name are air conditioning units, commercial ovens, lighting solutions, and much more. SPT has the experience it takes to make appliances worthy of our list.
The SPT countertop dishwasher was our pick from their lineup of portable dishwashers. The name leaves something to be desired, but the features we need are there. It has six wash settings for baked-on foods to quick washes. It has a 90-minute wash cycle for those tough jobs and an express wash for cleaning up dishes you remembered to rinse before sticking them in the dishwasher.
The exterior is stainless steel. It’s only 17” tall, so it is easy to find a spot for it. The faucet adapter comes in one size to fit standard faucets. If you need it attached a non-standard water source, you’ll need to buy an adapter for the adapter. Not all portable dishwashers feature multiple faucet adapters, but it’s a feature we prefer.
You can order the SPT portable dishwasher from Amazon. Without the multiple faucet adapters, it’s still a fair price. You can get six place settings in this dishwasher, and it will fit on top of most counters. It deserves its spot in our roundup.
- Six (6) standard place setting capacity / Includes dish rack, cup shelf, and cutlery basket
- Holds plates up to 10.5" in diameter / Seven (7) wash cycles / Quick connect adapter fits standard sized kitchen faucets...
- Stainless steel interior / Fits under most cabinetry / Water consumption (normal wash): 2.85 gallons
EdgeStar is a young company, but it offers a wide range of appliances suited to almost any home. They design and build their appliances in Texas. They offer a solid warranty because they test all their products before offering them to the public. Choosing a single dishwasher from EdgeStar to showcase in their review wasn’t an easy task.
We decided the EdgeStar DWP62SV was the best they offered based on what we were looking for in a dishwasher. Dishwasher manufacturers are not known for their colorful appliance names. The DWP62SV comes in silver, black, and white. That’s a bonus in a world of white or silver dishwashers.
It holds six place settings and has seven wash cycles. You can let it pound away at tough messes for up to 90 minutes, or quickly wash coffee mugs on the express cycle. It’s 17” tall and 22” wide, so it fits just about anywhere. It’s roughly the same size as a typical microwave. The LED display keeps you informed, so you aren’t guessing how much longer the wash cycle will take or if you turned on the dishwasher.
We did find a few problems with the DWP62SV. It’s a little louder than most dishwashers, but in the average household, we doubt you would notice the extra noise. The LED display isn’t just a clock like what you find on other brands, but you can’t read it from across the room. It weighs 44 pounds.
That’s not too heavy, but it is borderline heavy. It lacks multiple adapters and will only fit standard faucets. There are cheap adapters you can get if it doesn’t match your faucet.
You can order the EdgeStar DWP62SV from Amazon . That price is well within the range we would expect to pay. It’s almost worth the money just because you can get it in colors other than white. EdgeStar puts a lot of effort into making sure their products are worth every penny, and we don’t doubt them.
- Crisp white portable dishwasher with quick connect feature compatible with most kitchen faucets
- 8 place setting capacity with silverware basket
- At only 18” wide it’s perfect for small kitchens with limited space and easy roll castors make storing it a breeze
You may not have heard of Danby, but you have enjoyed they appliances at some point. They’re one of the leading specialty appliance manufacturers in North America. They offer a great warranty and great products at affordable prices. We had trouble narrowing our search to a specific dishwasher. Like the other brands we reviewed, Danby offers several high-quality dishwashers.
The Danby DDW1801MWP Portable Dishwasher won in the end. It’s not a countertop model, but it rolls and can fit in most closets. If you need a little more capacity, this one holds eight place settings; this model may be the dishwasher for you. It rolls so it doesn’t have to live on your countertop and you don’t need to lift a 50-pound dishwasher to hide it when guests come over.
The DDW1801MWP’s design works well for small living spaces. It’s only 18 inches wide but can hold a lot of dishes. The racks inside the dishwasher have a spot for everything from cutlery to wine glasses. Cleaning a broken wine glass out of a dishwasher isn’t a fun task. The wine glass adapter on the dishrack prevents wine glasses from bouncing around or vibrating against other dishes during the wash cycle.
We didn’t find many things to dislike about this model. It rolls around and holds more dishes than most portable dishwashers. It doesn’t have a LED display. The display is handy. It comes in white and only white. We didn’t grade any of the brands of models based on color because they are portable; no one sees the appliance unless you let them. However, a variety of colors would be nice.
This dishwasher is available from Amazon. It’s worth the price because it holds more, and you can roll it to storage instead of being forced to carry it. It uses the same, average amount of water the smaller countertop dishwashers use, but it can wash more dishes at one time. If you have closet space and no available counter space, this model is perfect for you.
- 6-place setting capacity
- Accommodates dinner plates up to 10"
- 7 wash programs—intensive/normal/eco/glass/90 min/rapid/soak
Unless you live under a rock, in a cave, you know who BLACK+DECKER is, or you know their products at least. They make drills, appliances, and a host of other tools and devices that make life a little easier. When most people think about BLACK+DECKER, they think about power tools. They make some of the best tools available, but they also make appliances.
The BCD6W is the model that scored a place on our 5 best portable dishwasher brands for 2018 list. It’s about the same size as most countertop dishwashers at 21.7 x 21.5 x 17.2 inches, and it holds six place settings. It has a LED display and easy touch controls. Touch controls are better than knobs because you won’t break them off and they last longer. It has seven wash cycles including a cycle for fragile glassware.
The BCD6W is a little loud during the wash cycle, but if you are watching TV, you won’t notice the noise. We like the LED display or the fact that it has one, but it’s little more than a clock on this model. The walls and door are thicker than other models, so a 10-inch plate fits, but it’s close.
Compared to the other dishwashers we looked at that’s an average price for six place settings and a compact design. If you have enough space on your countertop, the BCD6W is an excellent deal from a manufacturer that understands quality and customer service. If you lack room on your countertop, the BCD6W is the size of an average microwave, and you can move it.
The Final Results
- Danby and its DDW1801MWP dishwasher got the top spot because it rolls and can hold more dishes than other portable dishwashers.
- Magic Chef and their compact dishwasher took the second spot because you can fit an extra saucer or a plate in it beyond the six place setting capacity.
- BLACK+DECKER and their BCD6W dishwasher fell into the third spot. It got the third spot because of customer reviews claiming it got tough cleaning jobs done in one cycle.
- EdgeStar and its DWP62SV dishwasher are in the fourth spot because someone had to be fourth. Technically, EdgeStar and SPT tied on the final results.
- SPT and the countertop dishwasher are in the fifth slot because, as we mentioned above, it tied with EdgeStar and we wound up listing the last two spots alphabetically.
In the end, other than the Danby rolling model, all the dishwashers and brands in our roundup of the 5 best portable dishwasher brands for 2018 were about the same based on price, size, and capacity. A few minor details separate each brand and the portable dishwashers they manufacture. Any of these brands will do the job and provide years of service.
The Danby brand dishwasher rolls which is a feature we prefer over carrying the countertop models. That said, the countertop models fit anywhere a microwave would fit. If you have space on your countertop to leave the dishwasher permanently, all the brands we included in our roundup are stylish and don’t take up much space.
Consider buying the Danby rolling model if you suffer from a lack of countertop space. It’s a toss-up between counter space and closet space, and whether or not you want to lift a 50-pound dishwasher off your counter when you finish washing dishes. The Danby rolling dishwasher is double the price of the countertop models as well. We know you will be happy with any dishwasher on our list.
