Hello guys and welcome to my interview series.
Today we have a special guest – Kathy Radigan – one of my favorite bloggers out there.
So, let’s get to it….
1. Please tell us a little more about yourself.
I am a wife to one, mom of three and owner of a possessed dishwasher. If there was ever an award for the person most likely to spend their whole life never going on social media, I would have gotten it. I didn’t have my own email address till our youngest child started all day kindergarten in the fall of 2010. And I did that only because our school district went paperless.
Up until then I had spent the last eleven years up to my ears being a stay-at-home-mom to three kids who all have learning differences, including our daughter who has significant special needs. Our life was so insane that I barely had time to brush my teeth, never mind go on the computer.
All of a sudden I had a few hours all to myself and a new email address. I decided to finally do what my husband, friends, doctors, and my kids teachers had been telling me to do for years, start writing about our experiences as a special needs family. Little did I know that almost five years later I would be a social media addicted blogger/writer who contributes to a variety of online sites, including the Huffington Post, Scary Mommy and What the Flicka. I also have been in two anthologies. It’s really wild, and so much fun to find a new passion when you are in your late 40’s.
2. Tell us a little about motherhood and how it’s like writing about it.
Motherhood is insane. It is without a doubt the hardest, most rewarding job I have ever had. And yes, I do think it’s a job.
I love writing about my family and my life as a mom. I do my best to keep the focus on my feelings and experiences. My husband, Joe, who is a professional business editor, edits my blog each week and the kids often contribute ideas. I am careful as to what I share and the whole family has veto power.
3. What are your kitchen essentials?
Well I guess this answer is expected since my site is named, My dishwasher’s possessed, but my dishwasher is high on the list. Since it is possessed, it is frequently down and I really hate washing dishes by hand. A coffee maker and microwave are also things I could not function without!
Just a note as to how my site got it’s name. When I was staring on my blogging journey my husband and i had just bought a brand new and not inexpensive dishwasher. It worked perfectly when it was installed and then 30 minutes after they left it started making different beeping sounds and would light up like a Christmas tree for no reason at all. It would also go on, by itself, at all hours of the night.
When the repair person came to fix it it would work perfectly and then the minute they left it would act up again. One night when my husband and I were awoken by it again, I turned to him and said why don’t I call the blog My dishwasher is possessed?
It stuck and I really love it!!
4. What dishwasher do you use and would you recommend it?
For the longest time I would never say what make my dishwasher was because I figured that just because mine was possessed didn’t mean that the whole brand was bad. But after 25 repair appointments in four years, I will say that it’s a Kennmore Elite, and no, I would not recommend it.
5. Do you consider dishwashers an important part in the modern kitchen? Are they really needed?
For me, yes, they are. They make life so much easier, especially if you have a family. I guess if you are single or a couple you can go without ii, but as soon as you have children you really do need it.
6. What scares you the most about your possessed dishwasher? 🙂
Well I have grown so accustomed to it, that I actually fear that I will have to replace it one day! I like being the writer with the crazy dishwasher!
7. I love your “Getting Possessed with Kathy and the Dishwasher” series. Who was your favorite “victim”?
Maybe it’s the mom in me, but I really don’t have a favorite. I did the series for a year, (you can find all of them and it was so much fun to here). I also loved learning about people’s experience with possessed kitchen appliances. And let me say, there are a lot of crazy appliances!
8. Who is your favorite writer/publisher?
I love to read so it’s hard to pick just one author, but John Irving, Pat Conroy and Alice Walker are three of my favorites.
As for blogs, one of the best things about blogging is all of the fellow writers and bloggers that I have gotten to know.
I have so many favorites that I would be here for days if I listed them all!
9. A message to your readers:
Thank you. Thank you Thank you. I really appreciate the ongoing support that my readers have given me and my very possessed dishwasher.
Kathy, thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity to get to know you better.
We are following and appreciating your writing and work.
